Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6 G

Introduction

This is one of Nikon's most lightweight and least expensive telephoto lenses. It was released in the late 80's and is still being produced today. It was one of my first telephoto lenses and, in fact, I still use it when I want to travel light. You can view a portfolio made with the Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6 G here.ih

Performance: 4/5

"If you can fine tune the settings, you should be fine"

Build Quality: 3/5

"For a little more that 200$ new, what can you expect"

Value: 5/5

"A 230$ telephoto lens is unheard, of"

Compatibility: 4/5

"AF works on all cameras except D40, D40x, and D60"

I recommend this lens to any amateur photographer to use with the standard 18-55mm F/3.6-4.6 or 18-70mm.

Background

This is a "G" lens, meaning it is virtually useless on cameras without electronic aperture control (Manual SLR) because its manual aperture ring is removed to save cost (it's only ~200$). Therefore an effective aperture of F/22 can be used on such cameras. If you have a modern Nikon DSLR (D50, D60, D70, D80) if will work just fine. However this lens is unable to autofocus on the Nikon D40 and D40x, as their focus motors have been stripped to save cost.

Build Quality
For about 200$ brand new, what can you expect. The 70-300mm's build quality is not similar to that of it's bigger brother; Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6 ED VR II. Though it is worth noting that the VR model is over 300$ more expensive that the G.

The
Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G has plastic lens mount assemblies and plastic filter threads, as opposed to the more durable metal counterpart. Crimpage is not an issue with this lens. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand you can be sure that the weight of the lens won't shift the focal lenght, on the other hand some photographers might find it hard to focus and change focal length.

Usefuleness

Over the years, many lenses have come and gone, with little to no effect on the market or genre of photography. The reason this lens has stood the test of time (20+ years!) is a result of it's honest features and unpretentious price.

The
Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6 G has, believe it or not, radically revolutionized the world of telephoto zooms (for amateur photographers at least). It was one of the first affordable telephoto lenses, unleashing a new generation of observatory photographers. It was the first mid-range telephoto lens to be fully functional with today's DSLR cameras. But, most importantly, it was the first telephoto lens to be put to use in my arsenal of gear and has consitently won usefuleness against heavyweights like the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 as a result of it's sheer portability,  flexibility and, foremost, useability.
